To provide an effective learning experience for entry-level biology majors, an appropriate textbook was requiredone that would not intimidate students by its depth, or overpower them with its extent of detail. Essentials of Molecular Biology was selected because it emphasizes the fundamental features of various aspects of DNA, RNA, and protein structure, function, and expression without delving into an inordinate amount of detail of the relevant molecular processes.
The first and second editions of Essentials of Molecular Biology were hailed by students as very successful texts, both at Indiana University and at a variety of other institutions.
One of the key features of these editions is their "layering" approach to knowledge construction. Complexity is developed chapter by chapter, rather than presented all at once as a series of detail-laden descriptions.

Each of the new features was designed with the help of undergraduate students, in order to ensure that this textbook is "user friendly. It is intended to serve as the textbook for a short first course in molecular biology. Given the broad extent to which the concepts of molecular biology have been integrated into most of the other disciplines of biology including cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, and even evolutionary biology , the faculty at Indiana University revised its basic curriculum to position Molecular Biology as the first course beyond the freshman level.
As a result, this textbook is used by several hundred students at I. To the Instructor Following suggestions of professors who use this text at other universities, this third edition maintains the brevity of presentation and emphasis on fundamentals that characterized prior editions.
The expert editors deserve thanks for once again revising the text in an "anti-encyclopedic" fashion, avoiding the temptation to cram too much information into a single sentence or paragraph. This task was not an easy one, as molecular biology, spurred on by rapid technological advances such as nucleotide sequencing and protein characterization, is in a comprehensive data-collection mode. They also adhered to the use of "stick diagrams" as illustrations.
That is, of course, what this book is all about.
Essentials of Molecular Biology differs from the "mega-books" in purpose, in scope, and in depth. Since the big books contain more background information and substantially more detail, they are, by nature, not well-suited for beginning undergraduate courses that emphasize intellectual development the main goal of an undergraduate education.
These "mega-books" not only intimidate beginning students with their level of detail, overdrawn illustrations, and complex prose, but they also give students the erroneous impression that science is about facts, when indeed, scientists generally agree that science is really about evidence.
