Editions for Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques , Gossip, Boyfriends, and Other Realities of Adolescence:

A world in which she comes to school one day to find that her friends have suddenly decided that she no longer belongs. Or she's teased mercilessly for wearing the wrong outfit or having the wrong friend.

Or branded with a reputation she can't shake. Or pressured into conforming so she won't be kicked out of the group. For better or worse, your daughter's friendships are the key to enduring adolescence—as well as the biggest threat to her well-being.

In her groundbreaking book, Queen Bees and Wannabes , Empower cofounder Rosalind Wiseman takes you inside the secret world of girls' friendships. Wiseman has spent more than a decade listening to thousands of girls talk about the powerful role cliques play in shaping what they wear and say, how they respond to boys, and how they feel about themselves. In this candid, insightful book, she dissects each role in the clique: She discusses girls' power plays, from birthday invitations to cafeteria seating arrangements and illicit parties.

She takes readers into "Girl World" to analyze teasing, gossip, and reputations; beauty and fashion; alcohol and drugs; boys and sex; and more, and how cliques play a role in every situation.

Each chapter includes "Check Your Baggage" sections to help you identify how your own background and biases affect how you see your daughter.

It's not just about helping your daughter make it alive out of junior high. This book will help you understand how your daughter's relationship with friends and cliques sets the stage for other intimate relationships as she grows and guides her when she has tougher choices to make about intimacy, drinking and drugs, and other hazards.

With its revealing look into the secret world of teenage girls and cliques, enlivened with the voices of dozens of girls and a much-needed sense of humor, Queen Bees and Wannabes will equip you with all the tools you need to build the right foundation to help your daughter make smarter choices and empower her during this baffling, tumultuous time of life. Publication Details Publisher: I think the part on race is well handled.

S I went from stars bc I didn't enjoy this book but I would reccomend it to others. She defers to students and another WOC adult when she talks about it, and admits to her own lack of experience and awkwardness as a white woman. The part on LGBTQ feels a little outdated and she doesnt defer to another adult but does share some student testimonials.

She starts listing off statistics that are suppose to serve as warnings for how serious this topic is and how important it is to support the LGBTQ youth in your life but the connections seems clinical.

Jul 12, Kathryn rated it it was amazing. Excellent advice for helping a girl navigate middle and high school.

My daughter's teacher recommended this and even though my daughter is nine, I've started to use the techniques and discuss it with her, and it's already working. I admit it's hard to read at times because it dredged up some bad memories and feelings of my own, but it's good to know how to put them aside to help my daughter have a positive experience.

This book works very well with Love and Logic and has simple, common-sense scripts to use in difficult situations. I'll be referring back to it often in the coming years! I've tried twice to get through this book, but just can't.

While the labels may serve some purpose, I find Wiseman's tone irritating and somewhat condescending. The number of "I"s that appear per page are a testament to how I find her book to be touting her superiority rather than offering advice or any useful information based on facts and research rather than anecdotes. I just started reading "Untangled" by Lisa Damour and much prefer that. Apr 08, Jamie McQuiggan rated it it was amazing Shelves: I read about half of this and am shelving it for now, as the topics get progressively "older".

It's am amazing book to have on my shelf as my daughter grows up. A lot of interesting and valuable tips on interacting to help make sure she stays open to talking to me, so I can help her navigate this crazy world of girls and boys. Sep 13, EmmaB rated it really liked it.

I've been plodding through this book, wishing I'd read it when I was younger, as a teen and as an adult. Much of what she writes is through and from anecdotes, but the message is clear: I'm looking forward to plodding through Masterminds and Wingmen may it take me less than three months Nov 19, Lonna rated it really liked it.

Worth the read. Apr 15, Christine rated it really liked it.

I don't have a daughter. I do have nieces, many friends with daughters, and work with kids. I found this book informative and easy to read.

There was a lot to digest. Apr 13, Stephanie rated it really liked it Shelves: A must read for all moms with girls! Apr 15, Kristine rated it really liked it.

A must read for parents of teenage girls - recommend downloading this going into middle school Dec 31, Kimball rated it liked it. Nov 29, Anne V. This book is a wonderfully readable and rigorous resource for parents. Wiseman is a formidable source of comfort and objectivity, and the direct discussion the often difficult to understand world of growing girls reveals how much she loves her work with young people as well as the depth of her expertise.

I was relieved that this book was not just another series of complaints about teenage angst, but instead was a book that put what seem to be crazy teen behaviors into perspective and framed them This book is a wonderfully readable and rigorous resource for parents. I was relieved that this book was not just another series of complaints about teenage angst, but instead was a book that put what seem to be crazy teen behaviors into perspective and framed them in practical purpose.

The simple acknowledgement of the complex cycle of growth and quest for independence makes girls suddenly and absolutely reasonable, even when they are aggravating. There is no longer any reason to engage in battle!
