What we have here is something vaguely similar, a nasty commercial trick: As a result of this, many people are compelled to start reading the book in. The first chapter is like a soft fairy-tale that makes you think you are going to understand the Higgs boson in no time. But very soon you find that the. Then you go to site and find that the book is cheap and, since printer ink is expensive, you order a copy.

I would say: Ok, well-played! But no. Almost a decade after publication, there are no errata sheets at all. And the problem is, the errata make the book unpalatable. It's a headache.

All sort of errata, in simple and not so simple things. It is literally infested. It is simply immoral. This book should not be sold. McGraw Hill should be fined. I don't know. It really is a shame. If you want a gentle and interesting introduction to QFT and particle physics, go for Griffiths 'Introduction to Elementary Particles' and, after that, you may want to do the jump to Ryder or Srednicki.

Do whatever you want but please, avoid spending a cent on this scam. Not as advertised! On the back of the cover it says the following: Quantum Field Theory is your shortcut to understanding this fascinating area of physics.

Someone has figured out how to convey an understanding of the theory in simple terms that a beginner can understand and also include a good bit of meat for the advanced student.

This should be great! The bottom line is, I assume you have it.

The background I am expecting includes quantum mechanics, some basic special relativity, some exposure to electromagnetics and Maxwell's equations, calculus, linear algebra and differential equations. If you lack this background do some studying in these subjects and then give this book a try.

From there it dives right into the math in the first chapter. I'm giving this book 1 star more as a reflection of the publisher than the author.

It really is false advertising. The book itself, for the right reader, may actually be good. I couldn't tell you. After reading this book, I am perhaps more mystified than before.

I would at best regard this book as a primer to advanced quantum mechanics and a beginner's introduction to elementary particles. There is very little quantum field theory to be found. So, even neglecting the score of errata in the book, you will find that the author fails in his primary objective. No, I was not expecting an intensive mathematical treatment with in-depth and rigorous derivations.
