He incites you to multiply all that God has given you to live a truly significant life.

Luis Palau, Luis Palau Evangelistic Association Halftime is a fascinating story of spectacular success in business moving to spectacular significance in serving others.

It is a book for first- and second-halfers and for all those who appreciate a warmly personal odyssey. Now he has created a brilliant work on how to stop counting the years and start making the years count.

I know this will make my second half more meaningful. Having struggled through the transitions in a life fully examined and engaged, his insights and advice ring true and deep. His kind of coaching, derived from having played the game with skill and grace, is filled with wisdom that equips us with principles and strategies that enrich our lives.

Williams, chairman, Trammell Crow Company Bob Buford knows that in life, as in sports, it is important to finish well. What good are great stats in the first half if you come up short at the end? If you wonder if you have the right game plan for your life, call a time-out and read this book.

In retrospect I can see that I must have been divinely protected from chasing down the usual trails people take to find what was missing.

I took what I had written to a publisher who decided to turn it into a book for which he had modest expectations. Since then, it is safe to say a movement has evolved around Halftime.

More than , people have read this book, the majority of them using it as a catalyst to discover their own second half.

The or- ganization I founded, Leadership Network, responded to the thousands of letters I received by creating the Halftime Group, which provides resources and coaching to personally guide oth- ers through the journey from success to significance. People con- tinue to download the book in significant numbers, and the Halftime Group is busier than ever. Apparently the still, small voice that spoke to me about changing my game plan more than twenty years ago sounds familiar to people today, so familiar that my publisher asked me to revise and update the book.

My message is the same today as it was in if you are approaching middle age — which can be anywhere from your late thirties well into your fifties — the very best years of your life lie ahead of you.

Halftime: Moving from Success to Significance, Bob Buford

Whatever success you are having will never completely fulfill you. A life of significance — of really mattering — is yours for the taking, and the process I describe in this book will work for you. When I first wrote the book, however, few people owned cell phones and fewer still had access to the Internet. So I carved out some time at my farm in Tyler, Texas, to reread the book with one question in mind: if I were to start over today, what would I change?

As it turned out, not much, but enough to make this book a better resource for your journey. New, updated stories of people who have discovered their second-half mission. And coaching infused with the wisdom of those who read the book and learned something new as they began their second-half adventure.

Perhaps the best feature of the original edition was the won- derful foreword my friend and mentor Peter Drucker wrote. Sadly, Peter passed away on November 11, His introduc- tory words still ring true, so I have kept his foreword. Foreword Bob Buford has a peculiar genius for inspiring people to em- brace discomfort.

I first met Bob in when he asked me to teach pastors from large evangelical churches. I knew nothing about megachurches, and I wondered if I could possibly contrib- ute to their thinking. You have no idea what you will learn when you engage these church leaders — and that will make you more useful.

Part- way through the megachurch session, while I was encouraging pastors to create churches built to last, a hand shot up in the back.

Buford kept pushing and challenging. He slices through all the pretense and posturing, and hones in on the core. Better yet, he introduced us to one another, creating greater unity in the body of Christ and allowing iron to sharpen iron so that all of us could fly a little bit higher. Like most decisions in real life, it was not a stark choice between black and white, between self-indulgence and self-denial, between leadership and followship; it could be found in the vast gray area between such polar extremes.

CHAPTER 4 Success Panic I t snuck in like a thief in the night — a quiet, insidious intruder disturbing the dark peace and slinking about to pick at the trappings of a life overflowing with contentment, money, achievement, and energy. The group discussion has been very positive and from that perspective it has been worth the download. Don Flow, president, Flow Motors, Inc. Would you like to tell us about a lower price?
