Bicycle Bicycle is another major mode of road transportation and its users are equally vulnerable to road accident. In fact, it is estimated that there are some million bicycles in the world, twice the number of cars.
The use of bicycles is most common in Asian countries. In china alone, about a third of all traffic death occur among bicycle riders. Their exposure is largely due to the fact that provision is not usually made specifically for them as it is with pedestrian. Consequently, they are often left to manoeuvre in the generally traffic stream alongside larger and faster motor vehicles. Most of the cases of severe and fatal accidents involving cyclists are said to occur either at road junctions or street crossing, especially in urban centers.
Even in rural areas, motorcycles are gradually taking over the place of bicycles. This therefore reduces the risk of accident involving bicycle riders. The popularity of motorcycles is common in rural and urban areas of Nigeria.
In fact it has become a major source of poverty alleviation meant for the youth and other unemployed. Similarly, tricycles are common only in some urban centers of Nigeria, mainly to complement the use of motorcycles and motor vehicles. Accident involving motorcycle riders have recently become a major source of concern in Nigeria.
This is due to the following reasons. One, the riders often share the traffic space with fast moving motor vehicles; two, they travel at fast moving speed compared to other vulnerable road users; three they lack the physical protection which makes them vulnerable to being injured if they are involved in any accidents; four, due to their involvement as commercial riders, they are often too much in a hurry to make as much money as they can; and five, Many of them have limited education, training and testing, and obviously lack experience and license to operate the motorcycle.
All of these factors affect their conduct and contribute towards making them more vulnerable to accidents. In fact, in most government hospitals in urban areas, Accident and Emergency wards are often dominated by victims of motorcycle related accidents. Non — Motorized Road Users This involves mainly the use of animals to convey human beings and goods.
In Nigeria, such animals include donkeys, camels and horses. This mode of transportation was very common prior the introduction of bicycles, motorcycles and motor vehicles.
However, they have almost completely given way to motorized forms of transportation and traces of them can only be found mainly in rural areas. Due to their limited use, accident related cases are minor and quite few. A few cases of accidents do occur mainly in urban areas when fast moving vehicles hit the animals either on road junctions or crossings. On the whole however this mode of road usage does not constitute a serious risk to their users and other road users. Similarly, a number of researches conducted on Road Traffic crashes have shown that there are three major challenges of road safety: human, mechanical and environmental Mendie, ; Ibrahim, These challenges are aptly captured in Nigeria Highway Code as follows 1.
Human Factors Drivers Over speeding — The higher the speed, the shorter the time a driver has available to stop and avoid death.
