How to Photograph Absolutely Everything : Successful Pictures from Your Digital Camera
He proves that by giving simple clear instructions, the amateur photographer can take decent and sometimes outstanding photographs without the need for expensive camera equipment other than a digital camera or an extensive course on photography.
The diversity of the photographs and situations in the book are outstanding. There are just too many to mention. I'll just say that everything I would want to photograph was included; I couldn't find one thing missing.
In that sense, the book really does tell you how to "photograph absolutely everything". While this book does offer a lot of things, it will not replace the owner's manual for your camera. The two do make great companions, though. The manual tells you how to use the camera, this book tells you how to take the photographs. Even though I do have a DSLR camera don't ask me what all of the buttons are for , I really appreciated that the majority of the demonstration photos had Ang holding a point-and-shoot type camera.
It made me realize that great photographs can be captured with a variety of digital devices. I'm probably going to try out many of these techniques on my husband's point-and-shoot camera to see what kind of results I'm going to get. The adequate table of contents gave a general overview of what the book contained, which should aid in finding the various sections. The glossary had clear concise definitions and was interesting.
It introduced some great photographic terms. My one disappointment was that it introduced terms that weren't in the index. So I could read the definitions for "clone" and "white balance", for example, but I couldn't read more about them because they were absent from the index.
Having said that, the index does contain many entries and is useful for finding items in the book.

ISBN Paperback , p. This review can also be found on my blog, Daisy's Book Journal. However, I thought I might depart from what I've been doing here and talk about photography books. When photography becomes a passion - even if it is very much an amateur one as it is with me, reading about it helps to put a lot of things in perspective.
This is not a book that an aspiring photographer would tuck into their camera bag. Rather it is a beautiful book full of good, not so good and great photographs. Most of them are accessible, Until recently, I have only reviewed books of fiction. Most of them are accessible, i. Of course it helps to have money to travel, but that's a whole other issue! That leaves out a lot of people including me right now.
Honestly, this turned me off. A member of one of my photo groups said that one's camera should always be on A for aperture for the most part. Another article I read said that putting your camera in P program mode was only for amateurs.
I've used that mode and produced some good stuff although I had to adjust for exposure despite what I was told initially. Everything I've read says one thing: take it off automatic. So I was surprised me see this well known photographer, Tom Ang, actually recommend both P and even the much maligned Automatic setting. Helps with getting proper setting for particular lighting.
Would highly recommend. How to Photograph Absolutely Everything, by Tom Ang, really does exactly that, and does it from a very fine photographers point of view.
He starts the book with the basics - as he sees them. It looks like he is simply revealing his own personal photo style so that the reader can copy him. If readers can actually copy him they are sure to make really good pictures. What is more likely to happen is that readers will make adjustments to create a style of their own. Every piece of instruction, in every section of the book, is illustrated with excellent photographs.
The sections are titled: Some pictures, mainly in section one, are simply clear, sharp, and properly exposed photo illustrations.
But in every other section he uses really wonderful and inspiring pictures. This makes learning much easier. The books approach is well organized, perfectly illustrated, and certainly correct in every way. Every beginner should start here.
Most serious amateurs will also find much in this book to improve their own techniques. And in my opinion, it contains some photographs, and a technique or two, that would be of interest to professionals.
I'm very impressed with the wide diversity and high quality of Tom Ang's photographs. Learning everything in this book probably will not make anyone a great professional photographer. That will take years of practice. But this book sure will get beginners off to a great start. There are however some very good pointers in the book for beginning dslr users as well. For advanced amateurs there are few great pointers in the back of the book for shooting architecture and low lighting.
The book seems to be a lot crammed into it, and not enough detail or background material to go with it. Less is more at times and I believe that is what this book needed.
Perhaps, divided the book into one for point and shoot, with not so many shots on one page with small captions of basically how to get that shot. I did enjoy the section on taking architectural shots, this section seemed a bit under written and again less detail. Maybe it is my age and how I was taught how to read and comprehend.
Well, this is my two cents, and I know there is not any one perfect book on photography and which can handle as many aspects as this book has done by Tom Ang and his wonderful staff. One person found this helpful.
Hardcover Verified download. I am a beginner enthusiast and really have enjoyed Tom Ang's book, actually all of his books, but this one has been the most helpful for where I am right now.
It's geared towards using the built in camera settings ie portrait, landscape, sports etc. I have been going out to take pictures and am usually stumped or intimidated on what to photograph. I've used Tom's book as an assignment book and yes, I have several others that send you on aperture or shutter speed, or creative vision-type assignments.
But for his, I'll say I'm going to photograph architectural features, or flowers, or a cityscape, and I flip to the corresponding pages for review And I use his guidance when I start taking shots.
It's an easy to read, beautifully photographed book. And as I'm waiting for my first DSLR to be delivered, I love that his shots are shown being taken with a point and shoot or super zoom which is what I have been using. I plan on using this book as part of a digital photography workshop I'm conducting next month.
The best thing about this book are the hundreds of photos the author includes. The photos are of the type of subjects most any serious photographer can find, and they are captured with a point-and-shoot camera which is what most people shoot with.
I agree with previous reviewer that Ang could have included more detail about the exposure settings. This would have been very useful in helping readers understand better shutter speed, aperture, and ISO settings for particular types of shots.
I also don't particularly like the layout of the book. The size is pretty awkward. The paperback edition will I think make a better choice because it won't feel so weighty like this one.
This book should be more than a coffee table book; it should one that serious photographers use almost like a manual for getting ideas about what and how to shoot in everyday situations. It's a great resource for picking out one or two types of shoots like night or animal photography and practicing the suggestions that Ang provides.
Overall, great book, but if you don't like heavy hardback books, wait for the soft-bound edition. See all reviews.
