When I read this for the first time during my Delta course, it completely changed my vision of how English grammar worked. Reading it again now having had five years of processing those ideas and trying to work out how to apply them to the classroom reminded me of some of the key points I had forgotten, but also of the fact that Lewis expressly says 'I beg the reader not to impose the rather abstract explanations of this book on their unsuspecting students' in the last sentence of the book.
That When I read this for the first time during my Delta course, it completely changed my vision of how English grammar worked.
That's what I plan to continue doing now At some point, the results will appear on my blog: Dec 15, Andrew Gillies rated it it was amazing Shelves: Great book for EN language teachers and anyone learning English, including to interpreting level. Destroys a few myths about English verb grammar which has historically been calqued from Latin or French and which didn't really fit with the reality on the ground.
For example, did you learn that there were 4 conditionals in English if I do this then something will happen etc? It's terribly wrong! Ditto for reported speech and others. Mar 08, yengyeng rated it really liked it Shelves: Read this book if you ever lie awake at night wondering if there is a future tense in English, if it is possible to use "will" with reference to past time, if it is possible to use the past simple with reference to the present, if the present perfect can be used for actions in the "recent" past, and is "would" the conditional in English?
The answers are no, yes, yes, no and no.
Feb 23, Nick rated it it was amazing Shelves: Flying in the face of conventional wisdom, Lewis provides clear explanations of English grammar that make sense to language teachers and students. The world of English language teaching would be much better off if Lewis was the main source of pedagogical grammar.
This never happened and students worldwide are worse off as a result. Jul 05, GwennieA added it Shelves: PS - If you're interested in M. Lewis, start with The Lexical Approach: Reading this book has been a real pleasure, I think it is full of new ideas and interesting thoughts about the English verb.
I don't know, maybe I am thick, but I have seen a lot of people who are learning English who find the tenses difficult not as much as Spanish, granted. The Modals takes some more understanding After 28 years learning English I still don't fully understand them. A friend of mine with a PhD in linguistics is trying to learn English, and he can't get his head around English modals.
Descriptive Syntax and the English Verb
Your own language always looks very easy for you. That is the first mistake to make - and not part of my original statement. Likewise, I don't sense "will, could, shall, etc" as verbs. Are you saying that the Spanish is more complex? I'd have to do a lot more thinking, and research, but it strikes me that Spanish and English seem to have very nearly the same number of total tenses. Then you say "apart from the irregular verbs and modals So, I'm guessing that if you gave each tense a chapter, or several pages, and included examples or practice exercises not sure if the book includes them or not AND included irregular verbs and modals, well, it seems that the English verb book could turn out to be just as lengthy.

Then you could charge a hefty price for your book and sell a million copies and sponsor a big SpanishDict party! But the book I saw just had long lists of regular verbs like "I play you play he plays she plays It was such a waste of paper! Sadder still that people have spent the money to download it!
It never occurred to me that I could make a bunch of money writing lists of conjugated verbs in English. Just a list of the irregular ones. There are so many ways of saying even the easiest of things like I have. It is also difficult when someone tells you to think in Spanish and not your first language,Remind me again how many countries in this world speak english as opposed to spanish Somehow I seem to manage to have learnt English without realizing it was difficult, but the same cannot be said for my efforts with Spanish.
I can send it via email if someone wants it.
Just PM me. These constructions are shown to pose serious problems for past descriptive accounts either because of their patterning or because of their inherent variability within English. David Kilby works towards more satisfactory solutions to the problem of describing these constructions, either by exposing the basis of their variability or by pursuing in more detail the consequences which might follow from various different hypotheses as to the nature of the problem.
He shows that the structure of English is richer and more variable than can be accommodated in a brief grammatical outline of each area, aiming to sharpen awareness of the complexity of English structure, and at the same time showing the ways in which linguistic techniques can be used to gain insight into language structure.
